Welcome to the land of a thousand hills! If you're a digital nomad, expat, or location-independent worker considering making Rwanda your home, you'll need to secure your tax residency. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to obtain tax residency in Rwanda. Let's get started!

### Step 1: Obtain a Residence Permit

The first step in establishing tax residency in Rwanda is to obtain a residence permit. You must apply through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration. Ensure you have all required documents, which may include a valid passport, recent passport-sized photos, a completed application form, proof of accommodation in Rwanda, and evidence of sufficient financial means.

### Step 2: Register with the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA)

Once you have your residence permit, you need to register with the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA). This involves completing the Taxpayer Registration Form and submitting it along with your residence permit, passport, and other relevant documents. You will then be issued a Tax Identification Number (TIN), which is crucial for all tax-related matters.

### Step 3: Meet the Physical Presence Test

To be considered a tax resident in Rwanda, you need to meet the physical presence test. This means you must be physically present in Rwanda for at least 183 days within a 12-month period. Keep detailed records of your time spent in the country to ensure compliance.

### Step 4: Declare Your Worldwide Income

As a tax resident, you are required to declare your worldwide income to the RRA. This includes income from employment, business activities, investments, and any other sources, regardless of where the income is generated. Ensure you maintain accurate financial records and report your income truthfully.

### Step 5: Comply with Tax Obligations

Finally, ensure you comply with all tax obligations as a resident of Rwanda. This includes filing annual tax returns, paying any taxes due, and adhering to any other tax regulations set forth by the RRA. Failure to comply can result in penalties and legal action.
