What Is a Reportable Account?

A Reportable Account is a financial account category under the Common Reporting Standard, held by reportable persons, which financial institutions report to tax authorities.

Also known as: CRS Reportable Account, Reportable Financial Account.

How Reportable Account works

A Reportable Account is a financial account maintained by a reporting financial institution and held by one or more reportable persons, or by a passive non-financial entity with a reportable controlling person, once identified through the due diligence procedures of the Common Reporting Standard or the EU version in the Directive on Administrative Cooperation. Residence is generally established from self-certifications and indicia such as addresses, not nationality. For pre-existing entity accounts, the EU rules allow institutions to defer review until balances exceed an amount corresponding to USD 250,000. Information on each Reportable Account is exchanged annually, within nine months after the end of the calendar year, with the holder's jurisdiction of residence, while FATCA applies a parallel US concept under separate rules.

Reportable Account vs Offshore Account

Unlike an Offshore Account, a descriptive label for any account held outside the country of residence, a Reportable Account is a defined reporting category triggered by the holder's tax residence.

Example

Illustrative example: A remote worker resident in Country B keeps a brokerage account in Country A and self-certifies Country B residence. The Country A broker classifies the account as a Reportable Account and reports it to the Country A authority, which forwards the data to Country B.

Common misconception

Myth: An account held outside the residence country stays unknown to the home tax authority.

Reality: Under the Common Reporting Standard, an account held by a reportable person is generally reported to the jurisdiction of residence, wherever the account is maintained.
