What Is an Overseas Pension?

An overseas pension is a retirement savings arrangement registered outside the holder's country of tax residence, with taxation set by domestic law and tax treaties.

Also known as: Foreign Pension, Offshore Pension.

How Overseas Pension works

An overseas pension is taxed according to where the holder lives and where the scheme is registered, because contributions, investment growth and payouts may each be treated differently by the scheme country and the residence country, so one plan can receive relief in one state and ordinary income treatment in the other. The UK, for example, normally taxes its residents on income from pensions held overseas, with relief possible where the same income is taxed twice. Moving savings across borders adds rules of its own: a UK pension generally goes abroad only to a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme (QROPS), and a 25% overseas transfer charge applies unless an exemption fits.

Overseas Pension vs Cross-Border Pension Transfer

Unlike a cross-border pension transfer, which is the act of moving accumulated savings between schemes in different countries, an overseas pension is the scheme itself and the income stream it later pays.

Example

Illustrative example: A consultant builds up a workplace pension in Country A, then becomes tax resident in Country B. Country A granted relief on contributions; Country B may tax each later withdrawal as income, and the applicable treaty decides whether Country A keeps any right to withhold tax on the payments.

Common misconception

Myth: A pension built up abroad is only taxed in the country where the scheme is registered.

Reality: An overseas pension is generally reportable and taxable in the holder's residence country too, with treaties and foreign tax credits deciding how double taxation is relieved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax on an overseas pension?

Tax on an overseas pension generally depends on the holder's residence country; the UK, for example, normally taxes its residents on income from pensions held overseas, with relief available where the same income is taxed twice.

Can a UK pension be transferred overseas?

A UK pension can generally be transferred to a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme (QROPS); GOV.UK states a 25% overseas transfer charge applies unless an exemption, such as living in the scheme's country, is met.
