## What Is a Free Zone?

A free zone is a designated area of a national territory where goods and businesses receive special customs, tax or regulatory treatment under national law.

*Also known as: Free trade zone, Free economic zone.*

## How Free Zone works

A free zone is created when a state designates part of its territory where goods brought in are generally treated, for import duties and taxes, as outside the customs territory, and many states add corporate tax or licensing rules for companies established there. The customs dimension follows the World Customs Organization's Revised Kyoto Convention, while income tax treatment depends entirely on domestic law. In the United Arab Emirates, for instance, free zone juridical persons fall within Corporate Tax, and only a Qualifying Free Zone Person meeting statutory conditions can apply a 0% rate to Qualifying Income, the standard regime taxing income above AED 375,000 at 9%. Owner residency, place of management and substance still shape where profits are taxed.

## Free Zone vs Special Economic Zone (SEZ)

Unlike a special economic zone, which usually denotes a wider area with investment and tax incentives, a free zone in the customs sense centres on goods treated as outside the customs territory, although national usage overlaps.

## Example

Illustrative example: A founder resident in Country A sets up a company in a free zone of Country B to invoice international clients. The licence governs permitted activities, Country B's corporate tax conditions decide the company rate, and Country A may still tax the founder's dividends or treat the company as managed from Country A.

## Common misconception

**Myth:** Setting up a company in a free zone removes all tax obligations for the owner, wherever the owner lives.

**Reality:** A free zone defines treatment inside the host country only, and the owner's country of tax residency may still tax personal income or attribute company profits under domestic rules.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do free zone companies pay corporate tax?

Free zone companies follow host-country corporate tax law; in the United Arab Emirates, only Qualifying Free Zone Persons can apply 0% to Qualifying Income.

### Does a free zone company make the owner non-taxable at home?

A free zone company does not change the owner's personal tax residency, so the owner's country of residence generally keeps taxing salary, dividends or attributed profits under domestic rules.
