What Is a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)?

A Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) is an immigration permit under which foreign remote workers live in a host country while working for clients abroad.

Also known as: Remote Work Visa, Digital Nomad Residence Permit.

How Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) works

A Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) applies when a foreign national asks a host country for permission to stay while earning income through remote work for an employer, own company or clients located abroad, and the immigration authority decides the application against national conditions on income, work arrangement, insurance and documentation. Conditions differ widely: the Estonian page requires an employment contract with a company registered outside Estonia, a company registered abroad or freelance clients mostly outside Estonia, and states a minimum income of 4,500 euros net per month for a stay of up to one year. Croatia grants temporary stay of up to eighteen months to third-country nationals who do not perform work or provide services to employers in Croatia, with income of at least 2.5 average monthly net salaries for the previous year. The visa itself governs the right to stay and work remotely, while personal income tax liability generally follows separate domestic residency tests, such as day counts, a permanent home or a centre of vital interests, and any applicable double tax treaty. Some countries attach special tax treatment to digital nomad status, others do not, and a remote employer may also face permanent establishment or payroll questions, so outcomes remain subject to local rules.

Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) vs Tax Residency

Unlike tax residency, which a country determines under tax law from presence, home and personal ties, a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) is an immigration status granting the right to stay. Holding the visa may coincide with tax residency in some cases, but neither status automatically creates or excludes the other.

Example

Illustrative example: A software contractor with clients in Country B obtains a digital nomad visa from Country A and spends most of the year there. The visa authorises the stay, but Country A applies its own residency tests to decide whether the contractor becomes taxable on worldwide income. Country B may continue taxing the contractor as a resident if a home and family remain there, in which case the treaty tie-breaker between Country A and Country B determines treaty residence. The contractor's clients in Country B are generally unaffected, although an employer could face payroll or permanent establishment questions in Country A. Social security coverage follows yet another set of rules, so contributions may remain due in Country B or start in Country A depending on any totalisation agreement and local law.

Common misconception

Myth: Holding a digital nomad visa means income is taxed only in the home country.

Reality: A Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) governs immigration status only, and the host country may still treat the holder as tax resident under its own domestic tests.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital nomad visa?

A Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) is an immigration permit allowing a foreign national to live in a host country while working remotely for an employer, own company or clients located abroad, under national conditions on income and work arrangements.

Do you pay tax on a digital nomad visa?

Tax on income earned during a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) stay depends on the host country's residency rules, any special regime attached to the visa and applicable double tax treaties; the visa alone does not determine liability.

Does a digital nomad visa make you a tax resident?

A Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) does not automatically confer tax residency; residency generally follows domestic tests such as days of presence, a permanent home or a centre of vital interests, which vary by country.

How long can you stay on a digital nomad visa?

Duration of a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) depends on the issuing country; Estonia describes a stay of up to one year and Croatia grants temporary stay of up to eighteen months, subject to current national rules.
