Malaysia is positioning itself as a top destination for digital nomads through its DE Rantau program. Managed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the initiative aims to attract global talent by offering a flexible and supportive environment for remote workers and freelancers.

Expanded Eligibility for DE Rantau Nomad Pass

Initially catering to IT and digital professionals, the DE Rantau Nomad Pass has now been extended to include a broader range of occupations. Eligible roles include founders, CEOs, COOs, tax accountants, legal counsels, technical writers, business development managers, and public relations professionals. Both digital freelancers and remote workers can apply, provided they meet the minimum income threshold of USD 60,000 annually or USD 5,000 monthly.

Application and Approval Statistics

As of May 31, 2024, the DE Rantau program has received 3,096 applications, with 1,443 approvals, including 189 renewals. Applicants come from 78 countries, with the top five being Russia, Pakistan, Britain, Japan, and Australia. The average annual income among approved digital nomads is USD 69,000, with predominant expertise in software development, digital marketing, and AI/machine learning.

Family and Community Impact

A survey conducted at the end of 2023 revealed that 40% of approved digital nomads are residing in Malaysia with their families, significantly contributing to the local economy through spending on tourism, education, food, accommodation, and transportation. The program now allows parents of the main applicant to be included as dependents.

This network includes co-working spaces, insurance platforms, healthcare services, accommodation options, travel and leisure providers, cashless solution providers, and transportation services.
